Elder Goodman, Carmen, and Davis in an area of Chaiten
that was not ruined.  If you look closely you can see the
Chaiten Volcano smoking over their heads.
(Interesting sidelight: Chile has more than 120
potentially active volcanoes.  Hmmm . . . )
 Sunset on Chaiten Bay
The 12-hour ferry ride from Chaiten to
Puerto Montt (President and Sister Rappleye
are in the foreground)
Our van loaded on the ferry.  We have listed the
visit to Chaiten as an "adventure" in our journal.

 More damage on the river
 A rainbow over Chaiten Bay
The hotel where we stayed -- breakfast every
morning and hot water bottles in our bed
every night.  What more could we ask for?
The restaurant where we enjoyed dinner

southeast of Chaiten, where there was no devastation
Beautiful!

mind having -- with a stream in the front yard
A "hot shower" at Termas El Amarillo, a hot
spring site
An interesting flower pot
It is difficult to show by photo the devastation that occurred when
the Chaiten Volcano erupted in May of 2008.  The population
of nearly 5,000 was evacuated and only 800-900 have
returned.  The ones who have returned are determined
to rebuild their community even though the volcano
remains in "active" status.

A view of the bay at Chaiten after the eruption
caused avalanches of
 "lahars" (a concrete-like substance of
water, ash, mud, and rocks) in the bay
 More "beach" pictures
Stuck on the beach -- Elder Goodman was missing
his four-wheel drive vehicle about now
More "stuck on the beach" (we didn't get pictures of
Sister Goodman and Sister Rappleye digging out in their
dresses)

We arrived at "La Cascada," a 130-foot high
waterfall, after an awesome
forty-five minute hike through some
breathtaking scenery along the river.
One of the three bridges, crossing the river on
the trail to the waterfall.
P-day trip to Las Cascadas with Elders Abel, Davis,
Klinkefus, Barker, Carmen, and Mason.
A picnic in the park in the village of Las Cascadas,
a community surrounded by picturesque agricultural
land, old houses and German cemeteries.

The hotel "Dreams" we stayed in while doing
inspections for two days in Valdivia and
surrounding areas.
A site apparently recognizable the
world over.
