The remains of Fuerte de la Pura y Limpia Concepcion de Monfort de Lemus,
a Spanish fort built in the 1600's.  There were seven forts
built by the Spanish to protect Valdivia, which was one of the
most important centers of Spanish colonial control over Chile.
There is a museum on Chilean naval history on the site as well.
The cannons used to protect the entrance to Valdivia.
The lighthouse added to the promontory in the 1900's.
One of the remaining foundations of the fort.
The Niebla chapel can be seen right below the large pine
tree in the center of the picture (the photo is taken from the fort).
The original "magazine" where munitions were kept when
the fort was manned by the Spanish.  The lighthouse
is a more recent addition.
We are pretty sure this must be a good fishing stream.
If only there were time -- and Elder Goodman had a fishing license.
The black sand beach at Rininahue on the west end
of Lago Ranco.
 The falls at Rininahue.
 More springtime fields of yellow.
Lago Ranco from the Futrono (north) side of the lake.
The countryside is a patchwork blend of green and yellow
in the springtime.  The yellow plants are harvested to make canola oil.
We love the "cow crossings" near Lago Ranco.
We dubbed this the "Halloween bush."  It is the most
vibrant color of orange!
 A view of Lago Ranco.
Another spectacular view of Lago Ranco.

Before there was equipment parked in front of this house, the
AP's would take the new missionaries to spend their
first night in a hotel.  They would walk the four
blocks from the mission home in the dark and when
they arrived, they were told they would be spending
the night here. Wouldn't it make a GREAT
haunted house?
Our missionaries returning home in October -- Sister Kitto
on the right, Sister Chamorro on the left, and Elder Johnston
in the back.  Great missionaries that we will miss!
